On the 12th June 2013 – Mr Justice Brian J. McGovern delivered a judgement to various internet service providers in Ireland to block or otherwise disable access by their subscribers to the well-known website called ‘The Pirate Bay’.
Magnet was not included in this Judgment, but following recent legislation Magnet will this month be taking similar action to restrict access to the highly trafficked website.
Magnet will be restricting access to The Pirate Bay through the following access points in compliance with the judgement detailed below. Subscribers on Magnets service when trying to access ‘thepiratebay’ will be redirected to pb.magnet.ie.
This judgment is part of a tougher stance in recent years by authorities and interested stakeholders to bring stronger piracy protection to file sharing and illegal downloading across the internet in Ireland.
The downloading of copyrighted material free of charge and without the copyright holder’s approval is the main reason for the order which was jointly raised by EMI, Sony, Universal Music and Warner Music in Ireland.
The above judgment comes about by means of the controversial statutory instrument SI 59/2012 ‘European Union (Copyright and Related Rights) Regulations 2012 which was signed into power at the beginning of 2012. The statutory instrument makes it possible for copyright holders to seek court injunctions against companies such as internet service providers or social networks whose systems are hosting copyright-infringing material as outlined in last year’s thejournal media article.
